Other Information
Powers:
Agility, Speed, Stamina- Through intense training during his early decades and his innate magic reacting to his strong belief in mind over matter, Marcus is incredibly fit. Able to pull off Olympic-class gymnastics with relative ease (if he ever actually wanted to), though for the most part he just uses his incredible agility to dodge and pull off difficult jumps. His speed allows him to lag just behind a werewolf, though he doesn’t really want to put that to the test. Furthermore, his stamina allows him to accomplish these feats for extended periods of time.
Sight, Hearing- An intense curiosity and a propensity for high situational awareness led Marcus to train his senses of sight and hearing. As a result, both senses are exceptionally strong. In particular, his night vision is extraordinary. While not as good as most of those of the magical races, it’s much better than a humans sight would be at night. Sneaking up on him is also more difficult than with the average True Witch. His hearing is nearly on par with a werewolf’s, though a werewolf will still hear something well before Marcus
Omniligualism- From a young age, Marcus has been good with spoken languages. This mostly stemmed from his magical nature showing itself in an unobtrusive way. This particular ability has come in handy on many instances, allowing him to act as a translator.
Force Blasts- Overall, his magic isn’t really suited for sustained, or channeled, abilities, instead manifesting itself in quick bursts of force. While there’s the potential for use as a weapon, Marcus normally uses it in more of a defensive role: pushing back his opponent and throwing them off-balance, allowing him to escape.
Deflection- Much like his force blasts, his magic isn’t suited to a sustained shield. Instead Marcus diverts attacks against him. Coupled with his agility, he becomes a difficult target to hit.
Mental Guard (lvl 2)- Marcus prizes the privacy his thoughts afford him, and considering his force of will, it’s little surprise that his magic has strengthened his psychic defenses.
Personality:
Normally calm and quiet, Marcus is one of those that stand on the border between the social butterflies and the anti-social outcasts. Cautious by nature, he’s also extraordinarily patient, with a temperament that is unusually calm. He keeps his temper in check most of the time, though woe to them that manage the feat of making him angry, especially when he enters what he refers to as ‘battle calm’: the state in which he pushes past all of the anger that is swirling around him to the eye at the center of the conflict, where he can draw on that maelstrom, and bring out his abilities with reasoned intent.
One of the reasons he’s so quiet is that he prefers to think about what he’s going to say before he says it. Interestingly, when he doesn’t think first, he tends to say something that is probably best left unsaid (often embarrassing himself in the process). Put the most simply, he’s more a listener than a speaker. When he does speak, it’s with the drawling twang common to the area he grew up in.
Background:
It’s hard enough growing up as the eldest of three, and it’s even more difficult when you’re the first in five generations to manifest any magical abilities. The first time he demonstrated any abilities was when he was four, and throwing a fit at home. In his anger, he sent one of his toys flying through the glass window in his room, while he had been sitting five feet away from the small wooden hammer. The occurrence was surprising, to both Marcus and his parents. It wasn’t long after that one of his relatives, the one surviving magic-user, began tutoring the young boy in how to control his abilities and blend in with those around him.
At the age of twenty-four, with high school and college out of the way, Marcus was recruited to work at Artech, a research and development firm that was owned and operated by those of magical descent. His primary duties involved research and engineering into improving different vehicles, and many of the improvements to transportation over the last century can be traced back to the Artech Transportation Lab outside Atlanta. There were occasions, however, when the company would need someone to travel with company representatives in order to act as a translator. It was in the role of translator that he first came into contact with the White Rose Coven, though he was largely unnoticed. Funny thing how little attention gets paid to the guy having to think in multiple languages.
By the time he was a hundred years old, he could take apart, repair, tune up, and reassemble nearly any engine ever made. He didn’t really do much in the way of R&D any more by then, instead having been transferred to the garage for the lab, keeping the small fleet of vehicles in good condition. There weren’t many people assigned to the garage, but Marcus enjoyed the work and the few people he worked with.
It was only a matter of time that the Inquisition would turn its eyes to Artech. A series of attacks destroyed many of the outlying facilities scattered around the world, and then the main compounds were hit. Within a week, Artech and nearly all of its employees ceased to exist.
The only reason Marcus survived, was because he’d been sent to the small Prague office to do some maintenance on the cars kept for employees to use. He’d just gotten to his hotel room when the office was destroyed, and he almost didn’t make it out of the hotel when he found out what had happened to the Artech facilities from a news broadcast. A two-man team from the Inquisition had just entered the lobby looking for him when Marcus had stepped from the elevator, his pack on his back. He noticed the two men a split-second after he’d stepped from the elevator, and started running as soon as they started in his direction.
Two minutes later, Marcus had lost his pursuers, and carefully began making his way toward the White Rose mansion. When he arrived, he explained the situation he’d found himself in, and asked if he could join the Coven. There was safety in numbers, and he was definitely safer at the White Rose than on the run. He knew that running, it would have only been a matter of time before the Inquisition found him. With the Coven, he had a chance of survival.
He wasn’t a fighter, after all. Observation, translation, and tinkering with engines were what he knew, and what he had experience with. Fighting, even just to stay alive, would be something new for him, and he wasn’t exactly keen on learning how. He’d lost too many friends, some of them close, during the attacks on the Artech facilities, and even three years after the fact, he still felt the pain of having lost them.
